Interview: Celebrating 21 Years of Bekah Kate’s

Interview: Celebrating 21 Years of Bekah Kate’s

Happy Small Business Month!
This May marks a special milestone for us at Bekah Kate’s21 years of serving our incredible community here in downtown Baraboo. As I reflect on the journey, I’m struck by how much has changed—and yet, how much remains rooted in the same values: passion, perseverance, and people.

I recently sat down to share a little more of our story, and I wanted to take a moment to expand on that here—for anyone dreaming of starting a business or simply curious about how it all began.

How It All Started: From Botany to Bakeware

“Hi, I’m Bekah... and yes, I have a botany and conservation biology double major from UW–Madison. So of course, I ended up in retail—makes total sense, right?” 😉

Right out of college, I started working at a kitchen store, which had nothing to do with my degree but everything to do with my love of cooking. That job sparked something in me. I knew I wanted to come back to my hometown of Baraboo and build something of my own.

My husband and I found a space downtown and started dreaming big. And then—life happened. Literally. I was put on bed rest with my first child the day after we looked at the building. We pressed pause, welcomed our first son, and a year later—Bekah Kate’s opened its doors.

What I Wish I’d Known

If I could go back and give “21-years-younger Bekah” one piece of advice, it would be this:

“Whatever your budget is, double it. And then double how much cash on hand you think you’ll need.”

I can’t stress that enough. That early stage was hard—we felt cash-poor right out of the gate. And while we made it through, that extra cushion would’ve made a world of difference.

Weathering the Storms

We’ve been through a lot since 2003—a major recession, a global pandemic, and countless daily challenges. But with the help of my family, our loyal customers, and our amazing local community bank, we pulled through.

Support came in all forms. My husband is still my number one fan—he brings me lunch every day, helps with the kids, and keeps our family and the store grounded. My parents have always been by my side, too, ready to pitch in however needed.

And Baraboo? This town is special. I’ve built 21 years of friendships with other small business owners downtown. We share tips, customers, laughs, and sometimes even tears. We are not competitors—we are collaborators.

The Human Side of Small Business

Fear and doubt are part of the deal. But I try not to take myself too seriously. After all, as I like to say:

“This is not life or death. This is retail.”

That mindset helps keep things in perspective. And it’s a good reminder when the to-do list feels a mile long—because being a small business owner means wearing all the hats. Over the years, I’ve gotten better at knowing which hats to pass on and which ones to keep. (Letting go is a process… trust me!)

Family and Business: A Balancing Act

Running a business while raising a family is no joke. I opened the store while pregnant with my first son, and now I have three boys who’ve grown up alongside the store. It’s not always easy, but it's been a privilege to blend my roles as mom and business owner.

What Makes Baraboo Different

Being a small business owner in downtown Baraboo is uniquely wonderful. We’re not just neighbors—we’re a network. We lean on each other. We celebrate each other. We’ve been through it together.

That community support isn’t just comforting—it’s crucial. It’s why Bekah Kate’s has lasted. It’s why I still love coming to work every day.

Looking Ahead

So what’s next for us? More growth, more learning, and more of what we love—helping people find the perfect gift, kitchen gadget, or cozy home item they didn’t even know they needed. We're always evolving, but our roots remain the same.

To all of you who’ve shopped with us, supported us, or just shared a kind word: thank you. This month, and every month, I’m grateful for you.

Here’s to small businesses—the heart of our towns, and the dreams that don’t quit.

With love and gratitude,
Bekah
